When I opened Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center at 2416 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Dallas, the decision about where to practice was as intentional as any clinical choice I have ever made. I did not end up in South Dallas by accident, by circumstance, or because it was the most financially attractive option. I chose this location because this is where I believe my work matters most.

South Dallas has been underserved by healthcare providers for a long time. The zip codes south of I-30 have fewer primary care doctors, fewer specialists, and fewer healthcare facilities per capita than nearly any other part of the Dallas metropolitan area. When residents need care — whether it is for chronic pain, an injury, or a wellness checkup — they often have to travel significant distances, navigate unfamiliar neighborhoods, and deal with the kind of friction that discourages people from seeking help in the first place.

I wanted to change that, at least within my scope of practice. This article is about why I chose South Dallas, what this community means to me, and how I envision the role of chiropractic care in improving health outcomes for the people who live and work here.

Why MLK Blvd

Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is one of the most historically significant streets in Dallas. It runs through the heart of South Dallas, a neighborhood with deep roots in the African American community and a legacy of resilience, self-determination, and cultural pride. The Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce is on this street. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center is nearby. Fair Park — home to the African American Museum, the Cotton Bowl, and the State Fair of Texas — sits just to the north.

This is a neighborhood that has built its own institutions when the broader city did not provide them. That history of self-reliance resonated with me as I planned where to open my practice. I wanted to be part of that tradition — to build something in this community, for this community, rather than extracting resources from it.

MLK Blvd is also where my patients live. The people who walk through my door are my neighbors. They work in this community, they raise their families in this community, and they deserve access to the same quality of healthcare that residents of Highland Park or Plano take for granted. Geography should not determine the quality of your medical care — but too often in Dallas, it does.

The Healthcare Gap in South Dallas

The health disparities in South Dallas and the surrounding zip codes are well documented and deeply concerning:

Fewer providers. South Dallas has significantly fewer healthcare providers per capita than North Dallas, the suburbs, or even adjacent neighborhoods like Uptown and Deep Ellum. When there are fewer providers, wait times are longer, patient volume per provider is higher, and individual care suffers.

Transportation barriers. Not every South Dallas resident has reliable transportation. Getting to a specialist in North Dallas or Plano can require an hour-long bus ride each way — assuming the appointment falls within transit operating hours. For someone in acute pain, that barrier is enough to prevent them from seeking care entirely.

Insurance gaps. South Dallas has a higher percentage of uninsured and underinsured residents than many other parts of the metro area. When healthcare costs are a constant concern, preventive care and early intervention become luxuries rather than priorities — and small problems become big ones.

Trust barriers. Historical injustices in healthcare have created understandable mistrust in many communities, particularly among Black Americans. From the Tuskegee experiments to well-documented disparities in pain treatment, there are legitimate reasons why some people in South Dallas are hesitant to engage with the healthcare system.

I cannot fix all of these problems. But I can be part of the solution by being here, being accessible, being honest, and providing care that respects the intelligence and dignity of every patient who walks through my door.

My Path to South Dallas

My journey to becoming a chiropractor in South Dallas started long before I signed a lease on MLK Blvd.

I earned my undergraduate degree from Baylor University, where I developed a deep interest in human physiology and the science of healing. That interest led me to Parker University, one of the top chiropractic institutions in the United States, where I earned my Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Parker’s curriculum is rigorous — four years of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, radiology, diagnosis, neurology, and thousands of hours of hands-on clinical training.

After Parker, I completed clinical rotations at the Dallas VA Hospital. That experience was formative. I treated veterans — men and women who had served their country and returned with complex, chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Many of them had been through the medical system multiple times without finding lasting relief. Working with veterans taught me patience, thoroughness, and the importance of treating the whole person — not just the X-ray or the MRI.

The VA also taught me something about healthcare access. The veterans I treated did not always have the easiest path to care. Paperwork, wait times, bureaucracy, and distance were constant obstacles. I saw firsthand what happens when the system makes it hard for people to get help — they suffer longer than they should.

When it came time to open my own practice, those experiences guided my decision. I wanted to build a practice that was accessible, efficient, and located where the need was greatest. South Dallas was the clear choice.

What We Offer the Community

Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center provides a comprehensive range of chiropractic and therapeutic services. My goal is to deliver the same caliber of care you would find at any top-tier practice in Dallas — right here on MLK Blvd.

Expert Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustment is the foundation of what I do. Precise, hands-on spinal manipulation to restore alignment, relieve nerve compression, and improve how your body moves and functions. Whether you are dealing with chronic back pain, neck stiffness, or headaches, chiropractic care addresses the root cause — not just the symptom.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is an advanced technique that most chiropractors in Dallas do not offer. I completed specialized post-graduate training to provide this service because it fills a critical gap for patients with chronic muscle pain, stubborn trigger points, and soft tissue dysfunction that conventional therapies cannot resolve.

Full-Spectrum Treatment

In addition to adjustments and dry needling, I offer massage therapy, cupping, instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy, shockwave therapy, auto accident injury care, and work injury treatment. My patients do not need to visit three different providers to get comprehensive care. Everything they need is under one roof.

Accessible Hours

I know that many South Dallas residents cannot afford to miss a day of work for a doctor’s appointment. That is why we are open Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 6 PM, Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, and Saturday by appointment only. Saturday hours are a commitment I take seriously because healthcare should work around your life — not the other way around.

Financial Accessibility

We accept most major insurance plans, coordinate with PIP auto insurance for accident victims, work with workers’ compensation carriers for workplace injuries, and offer transparent self-pay pricing for patients without insurance coverage. I refuse to let financial barriers stand between my patients and the care they need. Visit our insurance and payment page for details.

A Black-Owned Practice in a Historically Black Neighborhood

I am proud to operate a Black-owned healthcare practice in South Dallas. Representation in healthcare matters — and I say that not as a slogan but as a clinical reality.

Research consistently shows that patients receive better care, communicate more openly, and achieve better outcomes when they feel culturally understood by their provider. Black patients, in particular, report higher levels of trust and satisfaction when they are treated by Black healthcare providers. This is not about excluding anyone — my practice welcomes patients of every background, race, ethnicity, and income level. It is about the fact that having a healthcare provider who shares your lived experience can make a real difference in the quality of your care.

South Dallas is a historically Black neighborhood, and the decision to build a Black-owned practice here is a deliberate investment in the health and economic vitality of this community. Every dollar spent at Moseley Chiropractic stays in this neighborhood. Every patient I treat walks out with more than pain relief — they walk out knowing that high-quality healthcare exists right here, on their own street, in a practice that was built with them in mind.

Our Vision for Community Wellness

My long-term vision for Moseley Chiropractic extends beyond individual patient care. I want this practice to be a catalyst for better health outcomes across South Dallas. That means:

Education. Many people in this community have never considered chiropractic care because they do not know what it is, how it works, or that it could help their specific condition. Part of my role is to educate — through this blog, through conversations with patients, and through community engagement — about the benefits of conservative, drug-free musculoskeletal care.

Prevention. I want to shift the mindset from reactive care (waiting until you are in pain to seek help) to preventive care (maintaining your body so pain does not develop in the first place). Regular chiropractic checkups, proper posture habits, and targeted exercises can prevent many of the conditions that bring patients to my office in acute distress.

Access. I will continue to do everything in my power to make chiropractic care accessible to every South Dallas resident — through extended hours, insurance participation, self-pay options, and a welcoming environment where no one feels judged, dismissed, or rushed.

Community partnership. Healthcare does not happen in a vacuum. I am committed to building relationships with other healthcare providers, community organizations, schools, churches, and businesses in South Dallas so that together, we can address the health needs of this neighborhood from multiple angles.

Safety is one of the first concerns people raise when they consider chiropractic care. You may have heard friends or family members express skepticism. You may have seen dramatic videos online that made you uneasy. Or you may simply be the type of person who researches any medical treatment thoroughly before committing — which is exactly what you should do.

At Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Dallas, I welcome questions about safety. I would rather a patient ask me directly and get honest, evidence-based answers than avoid chiropractic care altogether because of misinformation or fear. So let me address this topic clearly and completely.

The research is consistent: chiropractic care, particularly spinal manipulation, is one of the safest non-invasive treatments available for musculoskeletal conditions. It is recommended by major medical organizations, supported by decades of clinical research, and practiced safely on millions of patients every year. Here is what the evidence actually says.

What the Major Medical Organizations Say

Chiropractic care is not an alternative or fringe treatment. It is a recognized, evidence-based healthcare discipline endorsed by some of the most respected medical organizations in the world:

American College of Physicians (ACP)

The ACP — the largest medical specialty organization in the United States — published updated guidelines in 2017 recommending spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment for acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain. This recommendation places chiropractic adjustment ahead of prescription medication as an initial treatment approach. The ACP does not make these recommendations lightly — they are based on systematic reviews of the best available evidence.

The Lancet Low Back Pain Series

In 2018, the prestigious medical journal The Lancet published a series on low back pain that called for a shift away from pharmacological treatments and toward non-drug therapies — including spinal manipulation — as the primary approach to managing low back pain. The series emphasized that many patients are being harmed by overreliance on opioids and surgical interventions when conservative care like chiropractic is effective and safer.

World Health Organization (WHO)

The WHO recognizes chiropractic as a healthcare profession and has published guidelines on the safe practice of chiropractic care. Their position supports the integration of chiropractic services into mainstream healthcare systems worldwide.

American Medical Association (AMA)

The AMA recognizes chiropractors as healthcare professionals and supports interprofessional collaboration between medical doctors and chiropractors for the management of musculoskeletal conditions.

These are not niche organizations with peripheral influence. These are the institutions that set the standard for evidence-based medical practice globally. Their endorsement of chiropractic care reflects the substantial body of research supporting its safety and effectiveness.

What the Research Shows About Chiropractic Safety

Decades of peer-reviewed research have evaluated the safety of chiropractic adjustment. Here are some of the key findings:

Risk of Serious Adverse Events

The most commonly cited concern about chiropractic adjustment is the risk of vertebral artery dissection (VAD) following cervical (neck) manipulation. This is a serious but extremely rare event in which the artery supplying blood to the brain is damaged, potentially leading to stroke.

A landmark 2008 study published in the journal Spine found that the risk of VAD after visiting a chiropractor was no higher than the risk after visiting a primary care physician for the same complaint. The study concluded that the association between chiropractic visits and VAD is likely due to patients seeking care for neck pain and headache — which are early symptoms of VAD — rather than the manipulation itself causing the dissection.

A 2015 systematic review published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) analyzed the available evidence on adverse events following spinal manipulation and found that the risk of a serious adverse event is exceedingly low — estimated at less than 1 in 1 million cervical manipulations. To put this in perspective, the risk of a serious adverse event from taking over-the-counter NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) is substantially higher.

Comparison to Other Common Treatments

Context matters when evaluating the safety of any medical treatment. Here is how chiropractic care compares to other common treatments for the same conditions:

<colgroup>
<col style="width: 45%" />
<col style="width: 54%" />
</colgroup>

Treatment

Risk Profile

Chiropractic adjustment

Serious adverse events extremely rare (less than 1 in 1 million); minor soreness in ~30-40% of patients, resolves within 24 hours

NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen)

Gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney damage, cardiovascular events with prolonged use; ~100,000 hospitalizations per year in the US due to NSAID complications

Opioid pain medications

Addiction, respiratory depression, overdose death; opioids kill over 80,000 Americans per year

Epidural steroid injections

Infection, nerve damage, spinal fluid leaks, allergic reactions; temporary relief that often requires repeated injections

Spinal surgery

Infection, blood clots, nerve damage, failed back surgery syndrome, lengthy recovery; significant cost and irreversibility

When viewed in this context, chiropractic care is one of the lowest-risk treatment options available for back pain, neck pain, and related conditions. This is precisely why organizations like the ACP recommend it as a first-line treatment before more invasive or pharmacological approaches.

Minor Side Effects

While serious adverse events are extremely rare, minor side effects following a chiropractic adjustment are relatively common and completely normal. Approximately 30 to 40 percent of patients experience some degree of the following after their first few adjustments:

Mild soreness in the area that was adjusted, similar to post-workout muscle soreness

Temporary stiffness that resolves within 24 hours

Fatigue or a sense of tiredness as the body adjusts to the structural changes

Mild headache following cervical adjustment

These effects are transient and typically diminish with subsequent visits as your body adapts to proper alignment. They are comparable to the soreness you might feel after starting a new exercise program — a sign that your body is responding to a positive change, not a sign of injury.

Addressing Common Concerns

Let me address some of the specific concerns I hear most often from patients who are nervous about chiropractic care:

“I am afraid of the cracking sound.”

The popping sound you hear during an adjustment is called cavitation. It is simply the release of gas bubbles from the fluid inside the joint capsule when the joint surfaces are gapped apart. It is the same mechanism that causes the sound when you crack your knuckles. It is not the sound of bones breaking, grinding, or being damaged. The sound is harmless, and many patients find it satisfying once they understand what it is.

If the sound makes you uncomfortable, I can use low-force techniques or instrument-assisted adjustments that produce little or no cavitation. Your comfort is a priority — not a compromise.

“Can an adjustment make my condition worse?”

In the vast majority of cases, no. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to restore normal joint function, and the techniques used are specifically designed to improve your condition. However, it is possible to experience temporary soreness after an adjustment — this is normal and does not indicate that your condition has worsened.

In very rare cases, a patient’s symptoms may temporarily increase after an adjustment before improving. This is similar to how physical therapy exercises can cause temporary soreness before producing functional improvement. I monitor your response carefully at every visit and modify the treatment approach if needed.

“What if I have osteoporosis or a spinal condition?”

Certain conditions require modified chiropractic techniques, and some conditions may be contraindications for specific types of adjustment. This is exactly why I perform a thorough examination and review your health history before any treatment begins. If you have osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, inflammatory arthritis, or any other condition that requires special consideration, I will either modify my approach to ensure your safety or refer you to another provider if chiropractic care is not appropriate for your situation.

I will never perform an adjustment on a patient without first confirming that it is safe to do so. Period.

“I heard chiropractors are not real doctors.”

Chiropractors earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree, which requires approximately four years of post-undergraduate doctoral-level education. The curriculum includes anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, radiology, diagnosis, neurology, orthopedics, and extensive hands-on clinical training. Chiropractors are licensed by the state of Texas to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions, order and interpret X-rays, and provide a range of therapeutic services.

I earned my DC from Parker University — one of the top chiropractic institutions in the nation — and completed clinical training at the Dallas VA Hospital, treating veterans with complex musculoskeletal conditions. The rigor of chiropractic education is well-established, and the profession is fully recognized by every state licensing board in the United States.

How I Ensure Your Safety at Moseley Chiropractic

Patient safety is the foundation of everything I do. Here are the specific steps I take to ensure that your care is safe and appropriate:

Thorough initial examination. Before any adjustment, I perform a comprehensive evaluation including health history review, postural analysis, range-of-motion testing, orthopedic tests, neurological screening, and palpation.

Imaging when indicated. If your history or examination findings suggest the possibility of fracture, severe disc herniation, tumor, or other conditions that require imaging before treatment, I will order X-rays or refer you for an MRI.

Contraindication screening. I review your health history for conditions that may contraindicate specific techniques and modify my approach accordingly.

Technique selection. I choose the adjustment technique that is safest and most appropriate for your body, your condition, and your comfort level.

Ongoing monitoring. I reassess your condition at every visit and adjust your treatment plan based on your response.

Honest communication. If at any point I determine that chiropractic care is not the best option for your condition, I will tell you directly and refer you to the appropriate provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

“How often do I need to come in?” is one of the first questions nearly every new patient asks after their initial evaluation. It is a practical question that deserves a practical answer — and the honest answer is that there is no single schedule that works for everyone. The right frequency of chiropractic visits depends on your specific condition, how long you have had it, your overall health, your daily habits, and your personal treatment goals.

At Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Dallas, I do not prescribe cookie-cutter treatment plans. Every patient receives an individualized recommendation based on what I find during the examination and how their body responds to care over time. That said, there are general guidelines that can help you understand what to expect.

In this article, I am going to break down chiropractic visit frequency into three distinct phases — acute care, corrective care, and maintenance/wellness care — and explain what each phase looks like in practice.

Phase 1: Acute Care (Pain Relief)

When you first come to our office, you are usually in pain. Whether it is back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches, or an injury from a car accident or work incident, the primary goal during the acute phase is to reduce your pain and stabilize your condition as quickly as possible.

Typical Frequency: 2 to 3 Visits Per Week

During the acute phase, I typically recommend two to three visits per week. This frequency allows me to make consistent adjustments before your spine has time to settle back into its dysfunctional pattern. Think of it like orthodontic braces — if you only tightened them once a month instead of on a regular schedule, your teeth would barely move. The same principle applies to spinal correction.

How Long Does the Acute Phase Last?

The acute phase typically lasts two to four weeks, though this varies depending on:

Severity of your condition. A mild muscle strain may resolve in a week or two. A herniated disc with nerve compression may require several weeks of more intensive care.

How long you have had the problem. A condition that developed last week is generally easier to correct than one that has been building for years.

Your body’s response to treatment. Some patients respond rapidly and progress through the acute phase quickly. Others require more time. I monitor your progress at every visit and adjust the plan accordingly.

Contributing factors. If your daily habits — prolonged sitting, poor posture, physical labor, inadequate sleep — are actively contributing to the problem, the acute phase may take longer because we are fighting against ongoing stress to your spine.

What Happens During Acute Care Visits?

Each acute care visit includes a chiropractic adjustment tailored to your current presentation. Your spine does not feel the same every visit, so I reassess before each adjustment and modify my approach based on what I find that day. Depending on your condition, I may also incorporate dry needling to release persistent trigger points, massage therapy to loosen tight muscles, or other therapies that support your recovery.

Phase 2: Corrective Care (Stabilization)

Once your pain has decreased significantly and your spine is moving more freely, you transition into the corrective phase. The goal here shifts from immediate pain relief to structural correction and stabilization. During this phase, I work on correcting the underlying misalignments and dysfunctional patterns that caused your pain in the first place — not just managing the symptoms.

Typical Frequency: 1 to 2 Visits Per Week

As your condition improves, the frequency of your visits decreases. Most patients in the corrective phase come in once or twice per week. Your body is beginning to hold its adjustments for longer periods, and the muscles and ligaments supporting your spine are adapting to the corrected alignment.

How Long Does the Corrective Phase Last?

The corrective phase typically lasts four to eight weeks, though chronic conditions may require a longer period. This is the phase where many patients make the mistake of discontinuing care too early. You feel significantly better — maybe even pain-free — and assume the job is done. But feeling better and being structurally corrected are not the same thing.

Consider this analogy: when you stop taking antibiotics early because you feel better, the infection often returns. The same principle applies to spinal correction. If you stop treatment before the structural changes have fully stabilized, the misalignments and dysfunctional patterns will return — and so will the pain.

I understand the temptation to stop when you feel good. That is why I communicate clearly throughout the corrective phase about where you are in the process and why each remaining visit matters. I will never recommend visits you do not need — but I will always be honest about what it takes to achieve lasting correction.

What Happens During Corrective Care Visits?

Corrective visits continue to include chiropractic adjustment, but I also place increased emphasis on rehabilitative exercises, postural retraining, and lifestyle modifications. The goal is to strengthen the muscles that support your corrected spinal alignment so your body can maintain the improvements we have achieved together.

Phase 3: Maintenance and Wellness Care

Once your condition has been corrected and stabilized, many patients choose to continue with periodic maintenance care. This is not a requirement — it is a choice. But it is a choice that delivers significant long-term benefits.

Typical Frequency: Once Every 2 to 4 Weeks

Maintenance care involves periodic chiropractic visits on a schedule that works for your body and your lifestyle. For most patients, this means once every two to four weeks. Some patients with physically demanding jobs or active lifestyles prefer visits every one to two weeks. Others do well with monthly checkups.

The purpose of maintenance care is preventive. Just as you visit the dentist for regular cleanings to prevent cavities and gum disease, regular chiropractic adjustments maintain proper spinal alignment, catch minor misalignments before they become painful problems, and keep your nervous system functioning optimally.

Who Benefits Most from Maintenance Care?

Patients with physically demanding jobs — Construction workers, warehouse employees, nurses, and others who subject their bodies to heavy lifting, repetitive motions, and prolonged standing benefit from regular alignment checks.

Desk workers — Prolonged sitting is one of the most damaging things you can do to your spine. Regular adjustments counteract the postural stress of office life.

Athletes and active individuals — Training and competition place sustained stress on the musculoskeletal system. Maintenance care helps prevent sports injuries and optimize physical performance.

Patients with a history of chronic pain — If you have experienced recurring episodes of back pain, neck pain, or headaches, maintenance care reduces the frequency and severity of flare-ups.

Anyone who values proactive health — Some patients come in regularly even when they feel fine because they believe in maintaining their body the same way they maintain their car — with regular tune-ups rather than waiting for a breakdown.

Signs You May Need More Frequent Visits

Even during maintenance care, there are times when your body may need extra attention. Here are signs that you should come in sooner than your next scheduled visit:

Your pain returns or worsens. Do not wait for it to become severe. A single adjustment at the first sign of a flare-up is far easier and more effective than waiting until you are in crisis.

You were in an accident. Car accidents, falls, and sports impacts can create new subluxations that need immediate attention.

You notice decreased range of motion. If you suddenly cannot turn your head as far or bending feels restricted, something has shifted.

You are under significant physical or emotional stress. Stress causes muscles to tighten, which can pull vertebrae out of alignment.

You started a new job or physical activity. Changes in your daily routine — especially ones that involve new postures or physical demands — can affect your spinal alignment.

What About Patients Who Only Come When They Hurt?

Some patients prefer to visit the chiropractor only when they are in pain. That is their right, and I respect that choice. But I want to be transparent about what this approach means: by the time you feel pain, the problem has usually been developing for a while. You end up cycling through repeated acute care phases rather than maintaining the correction you worked to achieve.

It is similar to only visiting the mechanic when your car breaks down versus getting regular oil changes and inspections. Both approaches “work” in the sense that the car eventually gets fixed — but the preventive approach is less expensive, less disruptive, and keeps the car running better in the long run.

If you choose to come only when symptomatic, I will provide excellent care every time. But if you are open to maintenance care, I am confident you will experience fewer pain episodes, faster recovery when issues do arise, and better overall function.

Your Personalized Treatment Plan

At Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center, every treatment plan is built around your individual needs. During your initial evaluation, I will assess your condition, explain my findings, and recommend a specific visit schedule with clear reasoning. As you progress through care, I will communicate openly about when it is time to reduce visit frequency and when additional visits are needed.

I do not pressure patients into unnecessary visits. I do not sell prepaid visit packages. I recommend what your body needs based on my clinical findings, and I explain why. Your care is a collaboration between us — my expertise and your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to see a chiropractor multiple times per week?

Yes. Chiropractic adjustment is a safe, low-risk treatment. Multiple visits per week during the acute phase are standard practice and supported by clinical evidence. As your condition improves, visit frequency naturally decreases.

What if I cannot afford to come in as often as recommended?

Be upfront with me about your financial situation. I would rather see you once a week consistently than three times a week for two weeks followed by no visits at all. We can adjust your treatment plan to work within your budget while still making meaningful progress. Visit our insurance and payment page for details on accepted plans and self-pay options.

Can I come too often?

It is possible to over-treat, which is why I reassess your condition at every visit and adjust the plan based on your progress. If your spine is holding its adjustments well and your symptoms are resolved, I will tell you to space out your visits — not come more often.

Schedule Your Evaluation

The best way to determine how often you should see a chiropractor is to start with a thorough evaluation. Call Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center at (469) 372-0154 to schedule your appointment. I will examine your spine, identify what is going on, and build a treatment plan with a clear visit schedule tailored to your condition and your goals.

One of the most common questions I hear from new patients at Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center is: “Does my insurance cover chiropractic care?” It is a fair and important question. Nobody wants to commit to a treatment plan only to discover later that their insurance will not cover it — or that their out-of-pocket costs are higher than expected.

The short answer is that most health insurance plans in Texas do provide some level of chiropractic coverage. However, the details vary significantly from plan to plan. Some plans cover a generous number of chiropractic visits per year with low copays. Others impose strict visit limits, require referrals, or restrict which services are covered. Understanding your specific coverage before you begin care allows you to plan financially and avoid surprises.

In this article, I am going to walk through how chiropractic coverage works for the major types of insurance in Texas, including employer-sponsored plans, Medicare, Medicaid, auto insurance (PIP), workers’ compensation, and self-pay options for patients without coverage.

Employer-Sponsored and Private Health Insurance

The majority of employer-sponsored and individual health insurance plans in Texas include chiropractic benefits. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), chiropractic care is recognized as an essential health benefit in many plan structures, and most major insurers in the state include it as part of their standard coverage.

Here is a general overview of how the largest Texas insurers handle chiropractic coverage:

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBS TX)

BCBS TX is the largest health insurer in the state, and most of their plans include chiropractic benefits. Coverage typically includes a set number of chiropractic visits per year (often 20 to 30 visits, depending on the plan), subject to your standard copay, coinsurance, and deductible. Some plans require pre-authorization for chiropractic care, while others allow direct access.

UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare plans generally cover chiropractic services, though they often route claims through a subsidiary chiropractic benefits manager. Coverage may include a specific number of visits per year, and referrals or pre-authorization may be required depending on your plan tier.

Aetna

Aetna plans typically cover chiropractic adjustment and related services with visit limits that vary by plan. Many Aetna plans allow direct access to chiropractors without a referral from a primary care physician.

Cigna

Cigna offers chiropractic coverage on most of their health plans. Visit limits, copays, and pre-authorization requirements vary by plan. Some Cigna plans include coverage for complementary therapies like massage and acupuncture in addition to standard chiropractic adjustment.

Humana

Humana plans in Texas generally include chiropractic benefits, with coverage for spinal adjustments and, in some cases, additional services like X-rays and soft tissue therapy. Visit limits and cost-sharing depend on your specific plan.

What to Check Before Your First Visit

Before scheduling your first appointment, call your insurance company or review your plan’s Summary of Benefits to confirm the following:

Is chiropractic care covered under your plan? — Most plans say yes, but verify.

Do you need a referral? — In Texas, you do not need a doctor’s referral to see a chiropractor. However, some insurance plans require a referral for coverage.

What is your copay or coinsurance? — This is the amount you pay per visit after your deductible is met.

Is there a visit limit? — Many plans limit the number of chiropractic visits covered per year (commonly 20 to 30).

Are additional services covered? — Ask specifically about coverage for X-rays, massage therapy, dry needling, and shockwave therapy, as these may have separate coverage rules.

Is our office in-network? — In-network visits are always more affordable than out-of-network. Call our office at (469) 372-0154 and we can help verify whether we participate in your plan’s network.

Medicare Coverage for Chiropractic Care

Medicare Part B covers chiropractic care in Texas, but the coverage is limited. Medicare will pay for manual spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustment) to correct subluxations that have been documented through examination or imaging. The adjustment must be medically necessary and performed by a licensed chiropractor.

What Medicare does not cover:

X-rays ordered by a chiropractor

Massage therapy

Dry needling

Shockwave therapy

Other ancillary services

This means that while your chiropractic adjustments may be covered, any additional therapies I recommend will be your responsibility. Medicare patients at our office typically pay a copay of 20% for covered chiropractic services after their Part B deductible has been met.

If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, your supplemental coverage may pick up some or all of the copay amount. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), your chiropractic benefits are determined by the specific plan you have chosen — some Advantage plans offer more generous chiropractic coverage than original Medicare.

Medicaid Coverage in Texas

Texas Medicaid coverage for chiropractic care is very limited. As of this writing, standard Texas Medicaid does not routinely cover chiropractic services for adult beneficiaries. Some Medicaid managed care plans may offer limited chiropractic benefits, but this varies by plan and is not guaranteed.

If you are a Medicaid recipient interested in chiropractic care, I recommend calling your managed care plan directly to ask about chiropractic coverage. If your plan does not cover chiropractic, we offer affordable self-pay rates at our office. Finances should never be the reason you live in pain.

Auto Insurance: Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

If you have been injured in a car accident in Texas, your auto insurance may cover your chiropractic care through Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. Texas law requires auto insurers to offer PIP coverage to all policyholders, though drivers can opt out in writing.

PIP coverage pays for medical expenses — including chiropractic care — regardless of who was at fault in the accident. Standard PIP policies provide $2,500 in medical expense coverage, though you may have purchased a higher limit when you set up your policy.

Here is why PIP coverage matters for chiropractic patients:

No fault required. PIP pays your medical bills even if you caused the accident.

No deductible. PIP typically has no deductible — coverage begins with the first dollar of medical expenses.

No referral needed. You can see a chiropractor directly without a referral from your primary care physician or the emergency room.

Covers a range of services. PIP covers chiropractic adjustment, examinations, diagnostic imaging, and related services.

If you have been in an auto accident, Dr. Moseley provides comprehensive auto accident injury care including thorough evaluation, targeted treatment, and complete documentation for your insurance claim. Time is critical after an accident — both for your health and for your claim — so do not delay.

Workers’ Compensation

If you were injured at work or developed a condition as a result of your job duties, Texas workers’ compensation insurance should cover your chiropractic care. Under the Texas workers’ compensation system, injured workers are entitled to reasonable and necessary medical treatment for their work-related injuries, and chiropractic care is a recognized treatment.

Important points about workers’ comp and chiropractic care in Texas:

You must report your injury to your employer and file a workers’ compensation claim.

Your employer’s workers’ comp insurance carrier will authorize medical treatment, including chiropractic care.

You may need to see a doctor within the workers’ comp network, but you generally have some choice of provider.

Moseley Chiropractic provides work injury treatment including proper documentation and work status reports for your employer and the insurance carrier.

If you have questions about how workers’ comp coverage works with chiropractic care, call our office and we will help you navigate the process.

Self-Pay and Uninsured Patients

If you do not have insurance, your insurance does not cover chiropractic care, or you have exhausted your annual visit limit, you still have options at Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center. We offer transparent, affordable self-pay rates for all of our services.

We believe that financial barriers should not prevent anyone from receiving the chiropractic care they need. Many patients find that self-pay chiropractic care is more affordable than they expected — especially compared to the cost of prescription medications, emergency room visits, or surgical interventions.

For details on our self-pay pricing and payment options, visit our insurance and payment page or call (469) 372-0154.

How We Help with Insurance at Our Office

Navigating insurance can be confusing and frustrating. At Moseley Chiropractic, we do everything we can to make the insurance process as smooth as possible for our patients:

Verification before your visit. Call our office before your first appointment and we will verify your chiropractic benefits, including your copay, deductible status, visit limits, and whether you need a referral.

Claims filing. We file insurance claims on your behalf. You do not have to submit paperwork to your insurance company.

Transparent communication. If your insurance imposes visit limits or specific restrictions, we will let you know upfront so you can plan accordingly.

Auto accident and workers’ comp billing. We handle PIP and workers’ comp billing directly, so you do not have to coordinate between your chiropractor and your insurance carrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a chiropractor without a referral in Texas?

Yes. Texas law allows you to see a chiropractor without a referral from your primary care physician. However, some insurance plans require a referral for coverage purposes, so check with your insurer before your first visit.

How many chiropractic visits does insurance typically cover?

Most employer-sponsored and private insurance plans cover between 20 and 30 chiropractic visits per year. Medicare covers medically necessary adjustments with no specific visit limit, though ongoing medical necessity must be documented. Exact limits depend on your plan.

Does insurance cover dry needling?

Coverage for dry needling varies by insurance plan. Some plans cover it under the same benefit as chiropractic care, while others classify it as an ancillary service with separate coverage rules. Call your insurer or our office to verify.

When you are dealing with pain — whether it is a stiff back, an aching neck, a sports injury, or chronic headaches — one of the first decisions you face is which type of provider to see. Two of the most common options for musculoskeletal pain are chiropractors and physical therapists. Both are licensed healthcare professionals. Both treat pain without drugs or surgery. And both can be highly effective for the right conditions.

But they are not the same. Their training is different, their treatment approaches are different, and the conditions they are best suited to treat are different. Choosing the wrong provider does not necessarily mean you will be harmed, but it can mean slower progress, unnecessary costs, and frustration.

At Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Dallas, patients frequently ask me whether they should be seeing a chiropractor, a physical therapist, or both. In this article, I am going to break down the differences in a clear, unbiased way so you can make an informed decision about your care.

What Is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a doctor of chiropractic (DC) who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems — with a particular emphasis on the spine. Chiropractors earn a doctoral degree (Doctor of Chiropractic) from an accredited chiropractic college, which requires approximately four years of post-undergraduate coursework including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, diagnosis, radiology, neurology, and extensive hands-on clinical training.

The primary treatment tool of a chiropractor is the chiropractic adjustment — a hands-on technique in which the chiropractor applies a precise, controlled force to a specific joint (usually in the spine) to restore proper alignment and improve nervous system function. Many chiropractors also incorporate additional therapies such as dry needling, massage therapy, cupping, instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy, and shockwave therapy.

Chiropractors focus on the structural and neurological causes of pain. The core philosophy is that when the spine is properly aligned and the nervous system is functioning without interference, the body is better able to heal itself and maintain health.

What Is a Physical Therapist?

A physical therapist (PT) is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in helping patients restore movement, function, and strength after injury, surgery, or illness. Physical therapists earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from an accredited program, which typically involves three years of post-undergraduate education including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and clinical rotations.

Physical therapists use a combination of therapeutic exercises, stretching protocols, manual therapy techniques, modalities (such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and heat or ice), and functional training to help patients regain mobility, rebuild strength, and return to their normal activities. PT is often prescribed after surgery, major injuries, strokes, and other events that significantly impair physical function.

Physical therapists focus on movement, functional capacity, and rehabilitation. The core goal of physical therapy is to help you move better, get stronger, and return to the activities that matter to you.

Key Differences: Chiropractor vs. Physical Therapist

Understanding the differences between these two professions helps you choose the right provider for your specific needs. Here is a side-by-side comparison:

When to See a Chiropractor

Chiropractic care is the better choice when your pain is primarily structural or neurological in origin — meaning a joint is misaligned, restricted, or compressing a nerve. Here are the conditions and situations where chiropractic care tends to produce the best outcomes:

Acute and Chronic Back Pain

Back pain caused by spinal misalignment, disc issues, or joint dysfunction responds exceptionally well to chiropractic adjustment. The American College of Physicians recommends spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment for low back pain. If your back hurts because something is out of place, chiropractic care puts it back.

Neck Pain and Stiffness

Cervical pain caused by subluxations, poor posture, or whiplash is a core chiropractic condition. Gentle cervical adjustments restore alignment, decompress irritated nerves, and relax the muscles that are guarding the restricted joint.

Headaches and Migraines

Many chronic headaches have a cervicogenic (neck-related) component. Chiropractic adjustment addresses the structural triggers that medication cannot.

Joint Restrictions

If a joint in your spine or extremities feels “stuck” — limited in its range of motion, stiff, or painful with certain movements — a chiropractic adjustment is specifically designed to restore that joint’s mobility.

Auto Accident Injuries

Whiplash and other soft tissue injuries from car accidents benefit from early chiropractic intervention. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and treat post-accident injuries, document findings for insurance purposes, and prevent acute injuries from becoming chronic conditions.

Pain with No Clear Injury

If you are experiencing pain that developed without an obvious cause — no fall, no accident, no surgery — the problem may be a structural misalignment that accumulated over time from posture, repetitive stress, or daily habits. This is squarely within the chiropractic wheelhouse.

When to See a Physical Therapist

Physical therapy is the better choice when your primary need is rehabilitation, movement retraining, or progressive strengthening. PT excels in these scenarios:

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

If you have had knee replacement, hip replacement, rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, or any other orthopedic surgery, physical therapy is essential. A PT will guide you through a progressive exercise program to restore strength, range of motion, and function.

Stroke or Neurological Rehabilitation

Physical therapists play a critical role in helping patients recover movement and coordination after strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and other neurological events.

Balance and Fall Prevention

For older adults or patients with vestibular (inner ear) issues, physical therapists design balance training programs that reduce fall risk and improve stability.

Sports Performance and Injury Prevention

Physical therapists are excellent at designing sport-specific exercise programs to improve performance, correct movement imbalances, and prevent injuries before they occur.

Significant Strength Deficits

If your condition is primarily driven by weakness — not misalignment — progressive strengthening under the guidance of a PT is the most direct path to improvement.

When to See Both

In many cases, the best outcomes come from combining chiropractic care and physical therapy. The two professions complement each other well:

A chiropractor corrects the structural problem — realigning the joint, decompressing the nerve, releasing the restriction.

A physical therapist strengthens the surrounding muscles — building the support system that holds the correction in place.

Consider this example: A patient comes to my office with chronic lower back pain. Examination reveals a lumbar subluxation and a herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root. Chiropractic adjustment corrects the subluxation and shockwave therapy relieves disc pressure. But the patient also has weak core muscles and tight hip flexors from years of sedentary work — factors that contributed to the problem in the first place. A physical therapist can design a targeted exercise program to address those muscular imbalances and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Neither provider alone would have solved the complete problem. Together, they address both the structural cause and the functional weakness.

If I evaluate a patient and determine that physical therapy would benefit their care, I will recommend it. Patient outcomes are always more important than professional turf.

What About at Moseley Chiropractic?

At our Dallas practice, I integrate several treatment modalities that bridge the gap between traditional chiropractic and physical therapy. In addition to chiropractic adjustment, I offer dry needling for deep muscle dysfunction, massage therapy for soft tissue recovery, IAST for scar tissue and fascial adhesions, and cupping for myofascial decompression. I also prescribe specific exercises and stretches as part of every treatment plan.

This multi-modality approach means that many patients receive comprehensive care at our office without needing to visit multiple providers. That said, if your condition requires intensive physical rehabilitation, I will work with a trusted physical therapist to coordinate your care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a chiropractor and a physical therapist at the same time?

Yes, and it is often beneficial. Many patients see a chiropractor for spinal alignment and a physical therapist for strengthening and rehabilitation. The key is to make sure both providers are aware of each other’s treatment plans.

Is one more effective than the other for back pain?

For back pain caused by spinal misalignment or joint dysfunction, chiropractic care tends to provide faster relief. For back pain caused by muscle weakness or post-surgical deconditioning, physical therapy is typically more appropriate. Many cases benefit from both.

Does insurance cover both chiropractic and physical therapy?

Most major insurance plans in Texas cover both chiropractic care and physical therapy, though specific coverage varies by plan. Some plans limit the number of visits per year. Check with your insurance provider or call our office at (469) 372-0154 and we can help verify your coverage. Visit our insurance and payment page for more information.

Next Steps

If you are dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or a musculoskeletal injury and are unsure where to start, a chiropractic evaluation is an excellent first step. I will perform a thorough examination, identify the cause of your symptoms, and recommend the most effective course of treatment — whether that is chiropractic care alone, a combination of chiropractic and physical therapy, or a referral to another provider.

Call Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center at (469) 372-0154 to schedule your evaluation, or visit our new patients page to learn what to expect at your first visit.

Chiropractic adjustment is the most widely recognized treatment in chiropractic care, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood. Millions of Americans receive chiropractic adjustments every year, and the vast majority report significant relief from back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal conditions. But if you have never had one, you may have questions: What exactly happens during an adjustment? Why does it make that popping sound? Is it safe? How does moving a bone actually relieve pain?

These are fair questions, and they deserve thorough, honest answers. At Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Dallas, I believe that informed patients get better results. When you understand how a treatment works, you are more engaged in the process and more committed to the plan. In this guide, I am going to explain the science behind chiropractic adjustments in clear, straightforward terms — no jargon, no mysticism, just evidence-based information.

The Foundation: Your Spine and Nervous System

To understand how chiropractic adjustments work, you need to understand the structure they target: the spinal column.

Your spine consists of 24 movable vertebrae organized into three regions — the cervical spine (neck), thoracic spine (mid-back), and lumbar spine (lower back) — plus the sacrum and coccyx at the base. These vertebrae are stacked on top of one another, separated by soft, shock-absorbing intervertebral discs and connected by a complex network of muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Running through the center of this column is the spinal cord, which is the primary communication highway between your brain and the rest of your body. At each vertebral level, spinal nerves branch off from the spinal cord and exit through small openings in the vertebrae to reach your organs, muscles, skin, and every other tissue in your body. This is why spinal health has such a far-reaching impact on overall health — the spine protects and supports the nervous system that controls everything.

When the vertebrae are properly aligned and moving freely, this system works beautifully. Problems begin when one or more vertebrae shift out of position, become restricted in their movement, or lose their normal relationship with the vertebrae above and below. Chiropractors call this a subluxation.

What Is a Subluxation?

A subluxation is a functional misalignment of a spinal vertebra that affects the surrounding nerves, muscles, and joints. Subluxations can be caused by:

Physical stress — poor posture, repetitive movements, heavy lifting, auto accidents, falls, sports impacts

Chronic patterns — sitting for extended periods, sleeping in awkward positions, carrying heavy bags on one shoulder

Acute injuries — sudden trauma from a car accident, a slip and fall, or a sports collision

When a vertebra is subluxated, several things happen simultaneously:

Nerve compression or irritation — The misaligned vertebra can put pressure on the spinal nerve that exits at that level, disrupting normal nerve signaling. This can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the area served by that nerve.

Joint restriction — The affected joint loses its normal range of motion. The vertebra becomes “stuck,” and the joints above and below begin to compensate by moving more than they should.

Muscle imbalance — The muscles surrounding the misaligned vertebra tighten in an attempt to stabilize the area. This creates spasm, trigger points, and chronic tension.

Inflammation — Restricted joints and compressed nerves generate an inflammatory response that compounds pain and dysfunction.

The result is a cascade of problems that can produce symptoms far from the original site of misalignment. A subluxation in the lumbar spine can cause sciatica radiating down the leg. A cervical subluxation can trigger headaches that feel like they originate behind the eye. A thoracic misalignment can create shoulder and arm pain that mimics a rotator cuff injury.

The Adjustment: What Actually Happens

A chiropractic adjustment is the precise, controlled application of force to a specific vertebra or joint to correct a subluxation. Here is what the process looks like in practice:

Locating the Problem

Before any adjustment is performed, I conduct a thorough examination that includes postural analysis, range-of-motion testing, orthopedic tests, and hands-on palpation of the spine. I am looking for areas of restricted motion, muscle guarding, tenderness, and misalignment. I do not adjust randomly — every adjustment targets a specific joint that my examination has identified as dysfunctional.

Positioning the Patient

I position you on the treatment table in a way that isolates the joint being adjusted. Depending on the technique and the area of the spine being treated, you may be lying face down, on your side, or seated. The positioning allows me to direct the adjustive force precisely where it needs to go.

Delivering the Adjustment

With the target joint isolated, I apply a quick, controlled thrust in a specific direction. The speed of the thrust is what makes a chiropractic adjustment different from general stretching or massage. The rapid impulse overcomes the resistance of the stuck joint, gapping the joint surfaces momentarily and restoring normal movement. The force used is carefully calibrated — it is enough to move the joint but not enough to cause damage to healthy tissues.

The Immediate Response

After the adjustment, several beneficial changes occur:

The joint regains its normal range of motion

Compressed or irritated nerves are decompressed

Muscle spasm around the joint begins to relax

Local blood flow increases, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the area

Pain-relieving endorphins are released in response to the joint stimulation

Many patients feel immediate relief after an adjustment — reduced tightness, improved mobility, and a sense that something that was “off” has been corrected. These effects are not placebo. They are measurable physiological responses to the restoration of proper joint mechanics.

The Popping Sound: What Is It?

The popping or cracking sound you hear during a chiropractic adjustment is one of the most common sources of anxiety for new patients. Let me explain exactly what it is — and what it is not.

The sound is called cavitation. Your joints are surrounded by a capsule filled with synovial fluid, which lubricates and nourishes the joint surfaces. This fluid contains dissolved gases — primarily carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen. When the adjustment gaps the joint surfaces apart, it rapidly decreases the pressure inside the joint capsule. This pressure change causes the dissolved gases to form a bubble, which produces the audible pop.

It is the same mechanism that creates the sound when you crack your knuckles. It is harmless, painless, and has no connection to bone grinding, cracking, or breaking. The sound simply indicates that the joint was successfully gapped.

Some adjustments produce a loud pop. Others produce a quiet one. Some produce no sound at all — and that does not mean the adjustment was ineffective. The therapeutic value of an adjustment comes from restoring joint motion, not from the sound it makes. If the popping sound makes you uncomfortable, I can use techniques that produce little or no cavitation, including instrument-assisted adjustments and low-force methods.

Common Adjustment Techniques

There is no single way to perform a chiropractic adjustment. Different techniques are suited to different patients, conditions, and areas of the body. Here are some of the approaches I use at Moseley Chiropractic:

Diversified Technique

This is the most common chiropractic technique and the one most people picture when they think of an adjustment. It involves a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust delivered by hand to a specific joint. Diversified technique is versatile, effective, and appropriate for most patients and conditions.

Thompson Drop Technique

This technique uses a specialized treatment table with segmented sections that drop slightly when the adjustment is delivered. The drop of the table assists the adjustive thrust, allowing me to use less force while achieving the same result. It is particularly useful for patients who prefer a gentler approach.

Flexion-Distraction

This technique uses a specialized table that gently flexes and distracts (stretches) the lumbar spine. It is especially effective for patients with herniated discs, sciatica, and spinal stenosis. The gentle, rhythmic motion decompresses the discs and opens the neural foramina — the spaces where spinal nerves exit.

Instrument-Assisted Adjustment

Handheld instruments like the Activator deliver a controlled, low-force impulse to the targeted joint. This technique is ideal for patients who are uncomfortable with manual adjustments, elderly patients, children, or those with conditions that require a lighter touch.

Is Chiropractic Adjustment Safe?

Chiropractic adjustment is one of the safest non-invasive treatments available for musculoskeletal conditions. Research published in the journal Spine, the Annals of Internal Medicine, and numerous other peer-reviewed publications supports both the safety and effectiveness of spinal manipulation for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and related conditions.

The American College of Physicians recommends spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain — ahead of prescription medication. This recommendation reflects the substantial body of evidence supporting chiropractic care as a safe, effective, conservative treatment option.

Serious adverse events from chiropractic adjustment are extremely rare. Minor, temporary side effects — such as mild soreness, stiffness, or fatigue in the hours following an adjustment — are more common but typically resolve within 24 hours. These effects are comparable to what you might feel after a good workout.

At Moseley Chiropractic, patient safety is my highest priority. I perform a thorough examination before any adjustment, I review your health history for contraindications, and I select the technique that is most appropriate for your body and your condition. If chiropractic adjustment is not the right approach for your situation, I will tell you directly and refer you to the appropriate provider.

How Many Adjustments Will You Need?

This is one of the most common questions I hear, and the honest answer is: it depends. The number of adjustments in your treatment plan is based on several factors:

The nature and severity of your condition — Acute injuries may resolve in a few visits, while chronic conditions typically require a longer course of care.

How long the problem has existed — A condition that has been present for years will take longer to correct than one that developed last week.

Your overall health and lifestyle — Factors like age, activity level, posture habits, and occupation influence your recovery timeline.

Your response to treatment — Some patients respond quickly; others require more time. I monitor your progress at every visit and adjust your plan accordingly.

For most conditions, I recommend a course of care that starts with more frequent visits (two to three times per week) and gradually decreases as your condition improves. Once you have reached your treatment goals, many patients transition to periodic maintenance adjustments to keep their spine healthy and prevent recurrence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I adjust my own spine?

While you can crack your own back or neck, this is not the same as a chiropractic adjustment. Self-manipulation tends to move the joints that are already mobile rather than the specific restricted joint that is causing the problem. It can provide temporary relief but does not address the underlying subluxation and may even contribute to hypermobility and instability over time.

Should I see a chiropractor if I am not in pain?

Yes. Many subluxations do not produce obvious pain, especially in their early stages. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify and correct misalignments before they develop into painful conditions — similar to how regular dental checkups catch cavities before they become root canals.

How soon after an injury should I see a chiropractor?

As soon as possible. Early intervention typically produces faster recovery and better long-term outcomes. If you have been in a car accident, experienced a fall, or sustained a sports injury, schedule an evaluation promptly — even if you do not feel severe pain immediately.

Get Your Spine Evaluated

If you are curious about whether chiropractic adjustment could help your condition, the best next step is a thorough evaluation. At Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center, I will examine your spine, explain what I find, and give you an honest assessment of whether chiropractic care is the right fit for your situation.

Most people wait far too long before seeing a chiropractor. They assume the pain will go away on its own, they convince themselves it is not that bad, or they simply do not know that chiropractic care could help their specific problem. By the time they finally make an appointment, what started as a mild ache has become a chronic condition that is significantly harder — and more time-consuming — to treat.

I see this pattern regularly at Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Dallas. A patient comes in with severe lower back pain and mentions that the discomfort actually started six months ago as a minor twinge. A desk worker finally seeks help for headaches that have been occurring three times a week for the past year. An auto accident victim waits weeks after the collision before getting evaluated, allowing whiplash to set in and complicate recovery.

The earlier you address a musculoskeletal issue, the faster and more completely it resolves. Waiting does not save you time or money — it costs you both.

Here are five clear signs that it is time to see a chiropractor. If any of these sound familiar, do not put it off any longer.

1. You Have Persistent or Recurring Back Pain

Back pain is the single most common reason patients visit a chiropractor, and for good reason. It is also the leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. If you have been dealing with back pain that lasts more than a few days, keeps coming back, or limits your ability to work, exercise, sleep, or enjoy your daily life, a chiropractic evaluation is in order.

Here is what many people do not realize: back pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Something is causing it — a spinal misalignment, a herniated disc, a muscle imbalance, a compressed nerve, or a combination of factors. Over-the-counter painkillers may dull the symptom, but they do nothing to correct the underlying problem. The pain returns because the cause was never addressed.

During a chiropractic evaluation, I perform a thorough examination to identify what is actually driving your back pain. Treatment typically involves chiropractic adjustment to restore spinal alignment, combined with soft tissue therapy, exercises, and — in some cases — shockwave therapy to relieve disc pressure. The goal is not just to make the pain go away today. The goal is to correct the problem so the pain does not keep returning.

When to be concerned: If your back pain is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in your legs, difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels, or severe pain following a fall or accident, seek medical evaluation immediately. These symptoms may indicate a condition that requires urgent attention.

2. You Experience Frequent Headaches

If you get headaches multiple times per week — or even daily — you owe it to yourself to find out whether your spine is part of the problem. Most chronic headache sufferers treat each episode with medication and never investigate the structural cause. But research shows that a significant percentage of tension-type headaches and cervicogenic migraines originate from dysfunction in the cervical spine (the neck).

When the vertebrae in your upper neck are misaligned, they can compress or irritate the nerves that travel from the cervical spine up into the head. The muscles at the base of the skull — the suboccipitals — tighten in response, creating a band of tension that wraps around the head and produces the familiar throbbing, aching sensation of a tension headache.

Chiropractic care addresses this structural component directly. Cervical adjustments restore proper alignment, decompress irritated nerves, and relax the chronically tight muscles that perpetuate the headache cycle. Many of my patients who suffered from near-daily headaches experience dramatic reductions in frequency and intensity within the first few weeks of care.

If your headaches are accompanied by neck stiffness, start at the base of your skull, worsen with certain head positions, or are triggered by prolonged sitting or screen time, there is a strong likelihood that your cervical spine is involved.

3. Your Range of Motion Has Decreased

This sign is easy to miss because it tends to develop gradually. One day you notice that you cannot turn your head as far as you used to when checking your blind spot. You realize that bending down to tie your shoes requires more effort and produces more stiffness than it used to. Reaching overhead becomes uncomfortable. Twisting to grab something from the back seat of your car sends a jolt of pain through your spine.

Decreased range of motion is a clear sign that something in your musculoskeletal system is not functioning correctly. The cause could be joint fixation (a vertebra or joint that is stuck and not moving through its normal range), muscle tightness, disc degeneration, or inflammation. Whatever the cause, reduced mobility does not improve on its own — it tends to worsen over time as your body compensates by overloading other joints and muscles.

Chiropractic adjustment is specifically designed to restore joint mobility. By applying a precise force to the restricted joint, I break the fixation, restore normal movement, and allow the surrounding muscles and ligaments to relax. Patients commonly feel an immediate improvement in their range of motion after an adjustment, and that improvement continues to build with consistent care.

If you have noticed that your body does not move as freely as it once did, do not dismiss it as “just getting older.” Age-related changes in flexibility are real, but a stiff, restricted spine at any age is a treatable condition — not an inevitability.

4. You Were Recently in a Car Accident

Even a low-speed fender bender generates enough force to damage the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical and thoracic spine. Whiplash — the rapid back-and-forth movement of the head and neck during a collision — is the most common auto accident injury, and it does not always produce immediate symptoms.

In many cases, whiplash symptoms take 24 to 72 hours to appear. Some patients do not feel the full impact of their injuries until a week or more after the accident. During that delay, inflammation builds, scar tissue begins to form, and the muscles and ligaments that were strained during the collision tighten and become increasingly dysfunctional.

This is why I strongly recommend that anyone involved in a car accident — even if you feel fine immediately afterward — schedule a chiropractic evaluation as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment of whiplash and other auto accident injuries significantly improves recovery outcomes and reduces the likelihood of chronic pain developing months down the road.

At Moseley Chiropractic, I provide comprehensive auto accident injury care, including thorough post-accident evaluations, targeted treatment plans, and proper documentation for insurance and legal purposes. Texas law provides Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage that can cover your chiropractic care regardless of who was at fault in the accident.

5. You Sit for Most of the Day

Modern life is sedentary. Whether you work at a desk, drive for a living, or spend your evenings on the couch, prolonged sitting is one of the most destructive forces your spine encounters daily. Research has linked excessive sitting to increased risk of back pain, disc degeneration, poor posture, neck pain, reduced circulation, and a host of other health problems.

When you sit for extended periods, the natural curve of your lumbar spine flattens, placing increased pressure on your intervertebral discs. Your hip flexors shorten and tighten. Your glutes weaken. Your shoulders round forward, and your head drifts into the “tech neck” position that has become epidemic in the smartphone age. Over time, these postural distortions lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and structural changes that become progressively harder to reverse.

Regular chiropractic care counteracts the effects of prolonged sitting by restoring proper spinal alignment, mobilizing joints that have become fixed from underuse, releasing tight muscles, and retraining your body to maintain healthier posture. I also provide specific exercises and ergonomic recommendations that help you protect your spine during the hours you spend sitting.

If you spend more than six hours a day sitting — and most Americans do — periodic chiropractic visits can make a measurable difference in how your body feels and functions.

When to See a Chiropractor: The Short Answer

If you are in pain, your mobility is limited, you have been in an accident, or your daily habits are putting sustained stress on your spine, there is no reason to wait. Chiropractic care is safe, effective, non-invasive, and drug-free. It addresses the root cause of your symptoms — not just the surface-level pain.

Many patients find that chiropractic care helps them avoid more invasive and expensive treatments down the road. A spinal misalignment corrected today may prevent a herniated disc next year. A whiplash injury treated promptly may save you from chronic neck pain that lasts for decades. Early intervention is almost always better than delayed treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help even if I am not in pain?

Absolutely. Many patients visit a chiropractor for wellness and maintenance — to keep their spine properly aligned, maintain mobility, and prevent small problems from becoming big ones. You do not have to be in pain to benefit from chiropractic care.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Yes. Chiropractic adjustment is one of the safest non-invasive treatments available for musculoskeletal conditions. Serious complications are exceedingly rare, and research consistently supports the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and many other conditions. Read more about chiropractic safety.

How quickly will I feel results?

Many patients experience noticeable improvement after their first adjustment. However, the timeline for full recovery depends on the nature and severity of your condition, how long you have had it, and how consistently you follow your treatment plan. Acute conditions often respond quickly, while chronic conditions may require a longer course of care.

Schedule Your Evaluation

If you have never been to a chiropractor before, it is completely normal to feel a mix of curiosity and uncertainty. You might be wondering what the appointment will involve, whether adjustments hurt, how long you will be there, and whether chiropractic care is right for your particular condition. These are the same questions I hear from new patients every week at Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Dallas.

The truth is that your first chiropractic visit is nothing to be anxious about. It is a thorough, structured appointment designed to help me understand exactly what is going on with your body so I can build a treatment plan that actually works. There are no surprises, no pressure, and no unnecessary procedures. Just a one-on-one conversation, a detailed examination, and clear answers about how I can help.

In this article, I am going to walk you through every step of your first chiropractic visit — from what to wear and what to bring to what happens during the examination and your first adjustment. By the time you finish reading, you will know exactly what to expect and feel confident walking through our door.

Before Your Appointment: How to Prepare

A little preparation goes a long way toward making your first visit efficient and productive. Here is what I recommend:

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Think athletic wear, soft pants, or anything you might wear to a casual workout. You will be asked to move, bend, and lie on a treatment table, so restrictive jeans, tight skirts, or heavy boots are not ideal. You will not need to change into a gown at our office.

What to Bring

Bring the following items to your first appointment:

Photo ID and insurance card (if you plan to use insurance)

A list of current medications and supplements

Any imaging results (X-rays, MRIs) related to your condition, if available

Referral paperwork, if your insurance requires a referral

A list of questions you want to ask — write them down so you do not forget

Arrive Early

I recommend arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. This gives you time to complete intake paperwork without feeling rushed. If you prefer, you can call our office at (469) 372-0154 ahead of time and request that we email your intake forms so you can fill them out at home.

Step 1: Check-In and Intake Paperwork

When you arrive at Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center at 2416 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Dallas, our front desk team will greet you, verify your insurance information, and hand you new patient intake forms.

These forms ask about your health history, current symptoms, past injuries and surgeries, medications, allergies, and your specific reasons for visiting. They also ask about your daily routine, occupation, and physical activity level. Please fill them out thoroughly and honestly — the more I know about your background, the better I can tailor your examination and treatment plan.

If you have been to other doctors or chiropractors for the same issue, note what treatments you have tried and whether they helped. This saves time and prevents us from duplicating efforts that have already proven ineffective.

Step 2: One-on-One Consultation with Dr. Moseley

After your paperwork is processed, you will meet with me for a private, one-on-one consultation. This is a conversation, not a quick interview. I want to hear about your symptoms in your own words — when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, how it affects your daily life, and what your goals are for treatment.

I will ask questions like:

Where exactly do you feel pain, and does it radiate to other areas?

When did the pain begin — was there a specific incident, or did it develop gradually?

Is the pain constant, or does it come and go?

What activities, positions, or movements make the pain better or worse?

Have you tried any treatments before (over-the-counter pain relievers, physical therapy, massage, heat, ice)?

What do you do for work, and does your job involve sitting, standing, lifting, or repetitive motions?

What are your health goals — pain relief, improved mobility, better athletic performance, overall wellness?

This is also your opportunity to ask me anything. If you have concerns about chiropractic safety, questions about what an adjustment feels like, or uncertainty about whether chiropractic care can help your specific condition, this is the time to bring them up. I believe in complete transparency with my patients. You will never leave my office confused about your diagnosis or your treatment plan.

Step 3: Comprehensive Physical Examination

Following our consultation, I perform a hands-on physical examination specifically tailored to your symptoms and health history. This is not a generic screening — it is a targeted evaluation designed to identify the structural and muscular causes of your pain.

Depending on your condition, the examination may include:

Postural Analysis

I evaluate your standing posture from multiple angles, looking for asymmetries, imbalances, and compensation patterns. Many patients are surprised to discover that one shoulder sits higher than the other, their head tilts forward several inches past their center of gravity, or their pelvis is rotated — all of which can contribute to pain in areas they would never connect to posture.

Range-of-Motion Testing

I ask you to move your spine and affected joints through their full range of motion — flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation. This reveals areas of restriction, stiffness, and pain that help pinpoint the source of your problem.

Orthopedic and Neurological Testing

These are specific physical tests designed to identify particular conditions. For example, the straight leg raise test helps assess sciatic nerve involvement, while cervical compression and distraction tests evaluate neck-related nerve compression. I select the appropriate tests based on your symptoms.

Palpation

I use my hands to feel the muscles and joints along your spine and in the affected area. Palpation reveals muscle spasms, trigger points, areas of inflammation, joint fixations, and misalignments that may not be obvious from visual observation alone.

Imaging (If Needed)

In some cases, I may recommend X-rays or refer you for an MRI to rule out fractures, severe disc herniation, or other conditions that require additional evaluation before treatment can begin. Not every patient needs imaging — this decision is based on your symptoms, history, and examination findings.

Step 4: Diagnosis and Treatment Plan Discussion

After the examination, I will explain my findings in clear, straightforward language. I do not use jargon without explaining it, and I do not rush through this conversation. You will know:

What is causing your pain — the specific structural or muscular issue driving your symptoms

How we are going to treat it — which combination of chiropractic adjustment, dry needling, massage therapy, shockwave therapy, or other therapies I recommend

How many visits I anticipate — a realistic timeline for your recovery based on the severity and nature of your condition

What you can do at home — exercises, stretches, ergonomic changes, or lifestyle modifications that support your in-office treatment

I believe every patient has the right to understand their own body and make informed decisions about their care. If you have questions at any point, ask them. If something does not make sense, tell me. This is a collaborative process.

Step 5: Your First Adjustment

In most cases, you will receive your first chiropractic adjustment during your initial visit. Here is what happens:

You will lie on a padded chiropractic treatment table, usually face down or on your side, depending on the adjustment being performed. I will position your body to isolate the joint that needs correction, then apply a quick, controlled force to the specific vertebra or joint.

Does an Adjustment Hurt?

The vast majority of patients experience little to no pain during an adjustment. You may feel a brief sensation of pressure, and you will likely hear a popping or cracking sound. That sound is completely normal — it is simply the release of gas bubbles from the joint fluid, similar to what happens when you crack your knuckles. It is not the sound of bones breaking, grinding, or anything harmful.

After the adjustment, most patients report an immediate sense of relief — reduced tightness, improved range of motion, and a feeling of lightness in the area that was adjusted. Some patients experience mild soreness in the hours following their first adjustment, similar to what you might feel after a good workout. This is normal and typically resolves within 24 hours.

What if I Am Nervous About the Popping Sound?

If the idea of the popping sound makes you uncomfortable, let me know. I use a variety of adjustment techniques, and some produce less audible cavitation than others. I can also use instrument-assisted adjustments, which deliver a gentle, precise impulse without the traditional manual thrust. Your comfort is a priority — not an afterthought.

After Your First Visit: What Comes Next

Your first visit will typically take 45 to 60 minutes. Follow-up visits are shorter — usually 20 to 30 minutes — because the extensive intake and examination have already been completed.

After your first visit, here is what you can expect:

Immediate effects — Many patients notice reduced pain and improved mobility after their first adjustment. Others may feel some mild soreness that resolves within a day.

Follow-up schedule — Depending on your condition, I may recommend follow-up visits two to three times per week initially, gradually decreasing as your body responds to treatment. Acute injuries typically require more frequent visits at first.

Home care — I will provide specific exercises, stretches, or ergonomic recommendations to support your recovery between visits.

Open communication — If anything changes between visits — your symptoms improve, worsen, or shift — let me know at your next appointment. Treatment plans are not set in stone. I adjust them based on how your body is responding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the first chiropractic visit take?

Plan for 45 to 60 minutes for your initial appointment. This includes paperwork, the consultation, examination, discussion of findings, and your first adjustment. Follow-up visits are typically 20 to 30 minutes.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Texas?

No. In Texas, you can see a chiropractor without a referral from your primary care doctor. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage, so check with your provider before your visit.

Will I get adjusted on my first visit?

In most cases, yes. If the examination reveals that your condition is safe to treat immediately, I will perform your first adjustment during the same visit. If imaging is needed or there are factors that require additional evaluation, I will let you know and schedule your first treatment accordingly.

Ready to Schedule Your First Visit?

If you have been dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, or any other musculoskeletal condition, there is no reason to put off getting help. Your first visit to Moseley Chiropractic and Wellness Center is designed to give you answers, a clear plan, and immediate relief.

What is a chiropractor?

Chiropractors are neuromuscloskeletal doctors that focus on improving the bodies ability to function and heal. Chiropractors focus on the muscles, bones, and nerves of the body to aid the patient in obtaining or maintaining a pain free and healthy lifestyle.

What do they do?

We use spinal adjustments or manipulations, soft tissue techniques, and therapeutic stretches and exercises to correct misalignments also called subluxations. This helps to aid the body’s ability to heal itself and function properly. We educate patients on how to take care of their spine through exercise, proper ergonomics, and many other therapies.

Why do I need a chiropractor?

Our brains send impulses to each nerve in the nervous system to control the muscles, bones, and organs of our body. Misalignments in the body can limit the nervous system from communicating correctly with the brain. Due to this disconnect and interference, the body cannot perform at optimal function and will break down. This dysfunction can manifest itself through pain, discomfort, and inflammation. Getting regular treatments by a chiropractor can prevent the body from becoming misaligned and maximize your everyday performance!
